The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) is appealing for people to collect funds after policy director Alan McCombes was recently fined £500 and instructed to pay costs that could be as high as £25,000.
He was fined by the court after he refused to hand them minutes of a confidential SSP meeting. The minutes have since been handed to the court as it became clear that they were already in the public domain.
Along with other SSP members and supporters who went to the PCS civil service workers’ union conference last week, I helped to collect over £400 towards this appeal.
Lots of non-SSP members gave money. Most people see the SSP as the left party for Scotland and people realise that it would be a tragedy if the SSP went down.
People identified with the struggle against the right wing press and the courts. Any working class organisation could find itself under similar attacks.
The collection shows the support that exists for the SSP despite the difficulties we are currently facing.
If we can collect so much for the court costs, we should be confident about raising funds for the important Scottish parliament and council elections next year.
