Socialists and anti-war campaigners in Neath and Swansea were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Phil Cockwell last week while walking at Cefn Sidan sands in South Wales.

Phil, 73, was an active member of Plaid Cymru and the Neath branch of the Stop The War Coalition. He was a local historian, a deacon of his chapel and a former teacher in Neath.

Phil was a regular reader of Socialist Worker and attended almost all the meetings of the Socialist Workers Party in Neath.

A keen walker, Phil was passionate about the Welsh language and was a true internationalist.

He will be greatly missed by his many friends and comrades in Neath and elsewhere.
