Health victory in Walthamstow

by Tony Phillips, Chair of Waltham Forest Keep Our NHS Public
Issue No. 2008

Health activists in Waltham Forest, east London, won a victory last week when the local primary care trust temporarily withdrew planned budget cuts.

The attacks included a 22 percent cut to the district nursing budget and a 45 percent cut to school nurses. Our campaign forced the local council’s health scrutiny committee to demand that the trust consult the public.

We still face a threat to close 107 beds, four wards and two operating theatres, and to axe 400 jobs. Up to 200 marched through Walthamstow last Saturday in protest.
