First Bus Norwich strike threat

Issue No. 2009

Workers in the T&G union at First Bus company in Norwich are moving towards industrial action over pay.

Following a union meeting last week, engineering staff have decided to ballot for strikes, with drivers set to follow suit within days.

Angry staff say the company is three months late with its latest pay offer and have threatened to bring the city to a standstill again.

Bus workers in Norwich held week-long strikes in September last year.

A First engineer said, “Drivers will be balloted in the next couple of days and I think most people will vote for strike action. We have been waiting for a pay offer since April.

“The company is constantly putting up obstacles.

“If engineers strike the whole service will come to a full stop, just as if the drivers went on strike.”

A Norwich bus driver added, “Bus drivers are fed up. This is the third year running we have had this problem with pay proposals. It feels the management is intransigent and just not moving.”
