Ismail Patel is the chair of Friends of Al-Aqsa, a voluntary organisation working for Palestinian human rights. He spoke to Socialist Worker about why he will be attending the 23 September demonstration in Manchester called by the Stop the War Coalition.
“I think it is vitally important that we rise up against the atrocities that are being carried out by the Israeli government against the Palestinians.
“Our government’s silence is making the situation worse. In the past British civic society has helped the oppressed all over the world.
“The oppression being carried out against the Palestinians today is among the worst in the world.
“Therefore it is once again our duty to send a clear signal to our government to demand that Israel stops the human rights violations and brings relief to the Palestinians.
“I believe that it is extremely important that we get together in large numbers.
“Rallies and demonstrations have played a pivotal role in putting a brake on our government’s ability to carry out wars and atrocities in other parts of the world.”
