Middle East Report

“Hizbollah is more than a militia, the movement is also a political party that is a powerful actor in Lebanese politics and a provider of important social services.”

Cultural anthropologist Lara Deeb explodes some of the myths about Hizbollah in this informative article published by the Middle East Research and Information Project.

Angry Arab

“When Hassan saw his mum, he started yelling at her, ‘Where is Zeinab?’ His mum Rabab told him, ‘She’s having fun in heaven. There are no Israelis there, she’s happy there’.”

The heartbreaking story of four year old Hassan Chalhoub, the only child to survive the Qana massacre, whose sister Zeinab died next to him. Recounted on As’ad AbuKhalil’s excellent Angry Arab website.

Dahr Jamail

“Hundreds of the protesters ran through the UN building’s corridors smashing offices. ‘Fuck the UN! Fuck those bastards for not stopping this Israeli slaughtering of the innocents,’ screamed a young protester waving a Lebanese flag.”

Dahr Jamail, the anti-war journalist who helped break news of the massacre in Fallujah, reports from Beirut.

Alexander Cockburn

“Generals bellow about dumping ten rockets on south Beirut for every one landing in Israel and are astounded when people start talking about the fact that exacting reprisals on a civilian population is a war crime.”

The editor of CounterPunch, a US-based radical webzine, lays into the “crackpot realism” that guides the war drive of the US and Israeli elites.

Human shields

“B’Tselem’s initial investigation indicates that, during an incursion by Israeli forces into Beit Hanun, in the Gaza Strip, on 17 July 2006, soldiers seized control of two buildings in the town and used residents as human shields.”
