Leading figures in the anti-war movement are calling on people to demonstrate in Manchester on Saturday 23 September at the Labour Party conference to drive Tony Blair from office.
Tony Benn, the president of the Stop the War Coalition, told Socialist Worker, “Fifty years ago the then prime minister Anthony Eden worked with Israel to justify an intervention in Egypt to get the Suez Canal back. He was defeated and left office.
“Now there is collusion between Israel, the US and Britain to justify further attacks on Middle East countries. And it too will fail.
“Tony Blair should follow the fate of Eden. I hope everyone turns up in Manchester in September and we have a massive demonstration.”
Support for the protest is gaining momentum in Manchester itself. John P Johnston said, “Everyone present at the monthly meeting of the Manchester TUC Pensioners’ Association on Thursday of last week voted to support the protest.
“I think that it speaks volumes that people have seen through Blair when every member present condemned his policies strongly.
“It must be remembered that most of the members have been trade unionists and voted Labour their entire adult lives.”
