Translated, Volver means “To Return” - and this film is, in many ways, a return for director Pedro Almodóvar.
He returns not only to his personal roots in La Mancha where he grew up, but also to his roots as a filmmaker, with Volver revolving around its female characters.
Penelope Cruz gives a truly beautiful performance as Raimunda, although it was disappointing to discover that the haunting singing voice actually belongs to Estrella Morente.
The story is set in a traditional small town, to which Raimunda returns with her daughter Paula to visit her aunt, the woman who had raised her in the absence of her mother.
This is typical Almodóvar fare. The women are strong, the drama is high, and the cinematography is stunning.
It won’t convert you, but if you’re already a fan then you will love this film.
