Anti-cuts march

It would have taken more than torrential rain last Saturday to keep the people of Cumbria from marching to stop their Westmorland hospital from closing the essential heart and cardiac ward.

Over 5,000 people came from towns and villages across the region – journeys of well over an hour in many cases.

The campaign continues.

Up to 50 people joined a candlelit vigil outside City Hospital, Birmingham, on Thursday last week as hundreds of their colleagues were made redundant.

The area’s NHS trust, which runs hospitals in Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury, has announced that 450 jobs will be lost over two years.

The Unison union is now preparing an industrial action ballot.
