Fighting demolition of historic Tower Hamlets school

by Glyn Robbins
Issue No. 2018

Balfour Beatty is planning to demolish a historic school building brick by brick - and then sell the bricks for £1.50 each!

Bonner School in Bethnal Green is one of the original Victorian schoolboard buildings. But after years of neglect, New Labour Tower Hamlets council decided privatisation would improve facilities.

The first PFI scheme collapsed when the private partner went bust. Eventually a new Bonner School was built - but its playground is too small.

On Monday of last week George Galloway MP addressed local people who are determined to save the old school.

They are angry that public services are now at the mercy of unelected private companies.

Campaigners have served an injunction halting the demolition until the issue has been discussed at a full council meeting.
