This adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1848 novel about the lives of ordinary working class people in Manchester is a treat.

Mary Barton’s experience of poverty makes her dream of a better life.

The dramatic production and stage design bring home the death and devastation that industrialisation wrought.

This is another slice of pop craziness from the brilliant Basement Jaxx.

This album mixes everything from a little country and western on Take Me Back To Your House, to big band swing on On The Train and the 1980s electronic anthem feel of Lights Go Down.

This is exactly what you’d expect from the Jaxx, if a little more hyper than their 2003 Kish Kash.

The Jaxx are one of those bands that make more sense live, so keep an eye on their website for tour dates towards the end of the year.
