Zimbabwe’s government launched a brutal series of arrests last week when workers held a protest for basic rights.
Those seized included Wellington Chibebe, general secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), ZCTU president Lovemore Matombo, ZCTU first vice president Lucia Matibenga, as well as some 500 other trade union activists.
They were arrested following protests over the rising cost of living and shortages of fuel, food and essential medicines.
Chibebe, Matombo and Matibenga were severely beaten by the police, denied medical attention and access to legal representatives.
Most have now been released on bail but will face the courts again soon.
