Workers were set to protest at Southwark council in south London over a decision to scrap an 80-year-old building and maintenance department, Southwark Direct.
The plan would see the 200 workers move to a new contractor.
Tony O’Brien, the branch secretary of Southwark and Bermondsey Ucatt union, has warned that tenants will lose out.
Tony has worked for the council for 30 years. He said, “We have been doing this job for many years and understand the challenges and the tenants.
“We know many of them and see them as our bosses.
“We have no shareholders or chief executives to please, just the people of Southwark.
We all know what happens when private companies get the run of things, and I don’t want to see that happen here.
“Previously Southwark Direct has undertaken 45 per cent of the work across the borough.
“Feelings are running high and I would not rule out industrial action”
