Unions criticise government project on migrant workers

Issue No. 2020

A government project to curb the exploitation of migrants in the construction industry has been criticised by unions.

Bob Blackman, of the T&G union said, “This is rubbish. These workers haven’t got any rights.

“They need to be employed by the same firm for a year before they acquire employment protection rights.

“And that just doesn’t happen. If they complain about low pay or unsafe working conditions they are sacked.

“What the government seems to be looking for is employers who will confess that they are exploiting their workers. It’s unrealistic.”
