Planned post office closures breached national agrements

Issue No. 2022

Royal Mail has admitted that its recent announcement of mail centre closures (Fightback needed, 7 October) breached national agreements. It failed to follow the detailed consultation and negotiation processes laid down.

Martin Collins, the CWU union’s assistant secretary indoor, says, “It is important that the business is reminded that changes to the network cannot be purely based on the best financial case because they also have an obligation towards their employees, their families and the communities that they serve.”

He adds that should the business “fail in future to honour our national agreement in respect of reviews of the mail centre structure I will not hesitate to seek the authority of the executive to ballot all members employed in the mail centre network”.

The union must now launch a massive campaign including postal workers, the community, other unions to stop the closures.

And planning should start for possible industrial action.
