Over 70 people attended a meeting called by Hackney trades council and Leabridge Labour Party on Wednesday of last week to hear left Labour MP John McDonnell appeal for support in his bid to become the next leader of the Labour Party.
John stressed his opposition to New Labour’s support for the war and occupation of Iraq and the way it has whipped up Islamophobia.
Also speaking were the general secretary of the FBU union Matt Wrack, Maria Exall of the CWU union and Gill George, who sits on the Amicus national executive.
Gill, a Respect supporter, said that getting a good vote for John among trade unionists affiliated to the Labour Party could help build a fighting left.
John McDonnell spoke at three meetings in Southampton on Thursday of last week. He did a meeting at Southampton University, then one to a group of trade unionists and then another for Labour Party members.
I went along to the trade union meeting which was introduced by a T&G union member. There were about 40 at the meeting - a good mixture of Labour Party, Respect members and other campaigners.
We had a fantastic Keep Our NHS Public meeting in Worthing last Saturday with over 100 in attendance.
John McDonnell spoke really well as did Gill George. People also agreed with contributions about building a grassroots mass movement to save the NHS.
