Issue No. 1883

I AM one of a group of electricians working on the Piccadilly No 1 project in Manchester.

We formed a TGWU union shop and elected shop representatives in May last year.We then found ourselves locked out by our employer, Daf Electrical, which subcontracts to Crown House.

The main contractor for the project was a company called Carillion. The project we were working on was completed with scab labour. We have moved our picket line to a new Carillion project at Manchester's new courts of justice.

We intend to carry on our fight.

In November we spoke at the Construction Safety Campaign annual general meeting, alongside former building workers Ricky Tomlinson and Des Warren. In December we held a demonstration outside Manchester Town Hall. We released hundreds of black balloons to symbolise deaths in the construction industry.

We have built up a massive network of thousands of rank and file activists who are 100 percent in support of our strike.
