Military families back in court

Issue No. 2026

On Monday of this week, families of British soldiers killed in Iraq returned to the High Court for a three-day hearing to press for an independent inquiry into the reasons for the war.

In June the families were given permission for the appeal, although they were told by the judge that they faced “formidable hurdles”.

Peter Brierley, whose son Shaun was killed in Iraq, said, “After the failure of parliament to consider even a limited investigation we hope that the legal system will address this legitimate public interest.

“From the outset we were told we could not succeed, but we are still there fighting, and will continue to do so until all avenues are exhausted.”
