Victory for Ladywell Pool campaign

A two and a half year long and hard-fought campaign to save Lewisham’s Ladywell pool, jointly initiated and chaired by Lewisham Respect, led to a stunning victory last week.

The campaign galvanised massive support from the majority of local people. It saw Labour lose overall control of a council they had held for 30 years and lose 15 seats in the recent elections.

The issue was central in local and national elections.

The campaign used imaginative tactics such as organising stunts and satirical pantos, but also made full use of local government procedures. Having lost the argument and overall control of the council, New Labour is now claiming the mayor has saved the pool!

The campaign has energised local people and raised awareness of the deeply flawed directly elected mayoral system.
