Many people have rightly condemned a column written by Julie Burchill in last Sunday’s Observer newspaper and are shocked that the paper would publish it.
The column attacked transsexuals and sought to de-legitimise transsexual oppression.
Burchill described transsexuals as “a bunch of dicks in women’s clothing,” “trannies,” “a bunch of bed-wetters in bad wigs,” “shims,” and “she-males”.
These are the worst sort of discriminatory and offensive terms that transphobes use to harass, and sometimes physically attack and even murder, transgender people.
Working class people, and especially women, black people, disabled and LGBT people, face a tsunami of cuts from a cabinet of Tory and Lib Dem millionaires.
It would be better if columnists like Burchill played a role to help mobilise united opposition to the Tory assault rather than foster division.
