Karl Marx was born 200 years ago in 1818, in Trier, in what is now Germany. He became the world's greatest critic of Capitalism, his writings examining what makes the system work - how it is based on the exploitation of workers, and what that means for people and planet. But Marx did far more than sit in the British Library and write. He was an active revolutionary, publishing radical newspapers, building socialist organisation, campaigning for solidarity with the Paris Commune and much more.

This meeting will celebrate Marx's life and work. It will look at the relevance of his ideas in the 21st century, a time when despite the world's enormous wealth, working people face war, environmental crisis, racism and poverty. Marx's ideas have been distorted and challenged, but they remain the best tool for understanding capitalism and fighting for a socialist world.
