Venezuela is on the brink of a right-wing coup sponsored by the US.
After years of economic crisis and hardship for ordinary people, the country’s left-wing president Nicolas Maduro has been challenged by the opposition leader Juan Guaido.
Guaido has named himself “interim president”. The US, Brazil and the Western powers have given him firm backing. But it is not guaranteed that they will overthrow Maduro.
In Britain Labour shadow chancellor John McDonnell has opposed the coup. But the right here have used Venezuela as a means to attack socialists - they see it as an example of why socialism can never work.
Come to this meeting with local activist and author Andy Brown to discuss what is happening in Venezuela. What can socialists say about the situation? Is Maduro's Venezuela really socialist? And how can people win real liberation?
