Poet Benjamin Zephaniah, who publicly refused an MBE last year, has spoken out in support of Janet Alder, Respect’s candidate in Tottenham.
“I have a lot of time for Respect because I know that every candidate they have really cares about the political culture of this country,” he said.
“The old politics is letting us down badly—it’s all talk and all those grand political ideas don’t mean a thing if they can’t deliver justice to the people. Right now the people are not getting justice, and our human rights record is matching many of the places we once criticised.
“So when Janet Alder takes a stand she gets my vote, she gets it because I know what she stands for. Her family and my family have felt the same pain, we want the same kind of justice, we want it for us and we want it for you.”
