CAROLINE IS a Unison shop steward in Birmingham. She works at a small day centre for people with learning difficulties. Because she has a network of regular paper readers around her she was able to organise a workplace meeting recently at short notice.
She says, “I told everyone that John Rees, a Respect candidate for the European elections in the West Midlands, was coming. Ten of the staff turned up at the meeting-six of them are regular paper buyers. John explained about Respect. After the meeting people took leaflets to go and campaign for Respect locally.”
THE pensioners’ parliament last week in Blackpool saw lots of anger against the Labour government. So it is not surprising that sales of Socialist Worker went well. One of the pensioners involved in the sales says, “The thread of ‘money for welfare not for war’ ran through many of the discussions, formal and informal, during the week.
“It was easy to introduce Respect into the discussion and to interest people in Socialist Worker which had excellent coverage of the war and also of how pensions are becoming a big issue. We sold over 75 copies in all.”
AROUND THE 10 June elections Socialist Worker will be printed and distributed on slightly different days in order to be right up with the news. Your next paper will, as usual, arrive with sellers on Wednesday 2 June. The next issue will be printed early and arrive on Monday 7 June to give plenty of time for extra sales in those vital last few days before the vote.

GERRY REPORTS that sellers in Heaton recently decided to assess how best to boost sales. “We all agreed to try to sell the paper more systematically within our workplaces. I started today and sold four papers. We also decided to establish a weekly workplace sale which two of us started at 7am this morning outside of the Department of Work and Pensions in Longbenton. We sold eight papers in half an hour.”
