An emergency meeting of the Cairo Conference organising committee last weekend called for two key solidarity actions with the people of Lebanon.

The first was to support the international anti-war week of action starting on 23 September. The Stop the War Coalition’s Time To Go demonstration in Manchester is part of this.

The Egyptian movement is planning to organise a solidarity ship to leave the Egyptian port of Alexandria on 28 September bound for Lebanon.

The ship will carry humanitarian aid as well as a political message of solidarity with the Lebanese people’s resistance from leading figures of the Egyptian anti-war movement.

The second decision was to call a global resistance conference in Beirut on 25-26 November. Egyptian participants were especially keen that Latin American popular resistance activists be invited to attend.

This plan was backed by representatives of Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement, at the committee.

The committee also received a video message of support from the head of Hamas’s political bureau.

The annual Cairo Conference has met four times since 2002, bringing together socialists, Arab nationalists and Islamists opposed to war and neo?liberalism in the Middle East.
