Every public sector worker faces the same attacks that postal workers are fighting.

Because of this it is common sense for unions to cooperate and face the attacks together. We must not allow ourselves to be picked off one by one.

The PCS civil service workers’ union has been in dispute over jobs, pay and privatisation since January. Our annual conference voted to seek the widest possible unity in action with other public sector unions.

We have embarked on a major consultation with members to explain the strategy and discuss what people are willing to do to back it up.

All indications from meetings held so far is that members see coordinated action as the way to win. The CWU should not have to fight alone.

PCS members should get down to postal workers’ picket lines this week to show our solidarity.

The PCS national executive meeting following our conference authorised Mark Serwotka, the PCS general secretary, to approach the CWU to discuss coordinating industrial action.

Unions acting together would raise the stakes in this dispute and force the government back.
