Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists (BUF) were known as the Blackshirts because of their military-style uniforms.
The BUF had taken advantage of the global economic crisis in the 1930s.
It promoted antisemitic ideas that were widespread in middle class circles at the time.
Fascism can also attract working people who suffer attacks from the system by offering easy targets.
In the 1930s the fascists were able to build off the back of the establishment’s scapegoating of Jews. Today they target Muslims in the same way.
