The biggest ever pro-choice protest in Dublin took place last Saturday after the death of Savita Halappanavar.
Savita died in Galway last month after being repeatedly refused a life-saving abortion. Some 20,000 people joined the Dublin protest and thousands more demonstrated across Ireland.
“For more than 20 years we have seen political cowardice and inaction on this issue,” said Sinead Kennedy, one of the organisers of the march. “The theme of this march is ‘never again’. Never again will a woman be allowed to die.”
Marchers carried a giant banner reading “Never Again” and chanted “Twenty years is far too long, ignoring women’s rights is wrong.”
The widespread fury over Savita’s death pushed the Irish government to discuss a report into abortion on Tuesday of this week.
It’s a disgrace that it takes a woman’s death for the government to even discuss the issue. It will take more protests to win change.
