Tens of thousands marched in Rome—and police responded with tear gas and water cannon.

Protests took place in several other Italian cities as people voiced their fury at prime minister Silvio Berlusconi and the bankers.

Alessandro reports from Milan, “Things started early here. On Friday afternoon mostly young people and students filled the streets, chanting against the banks and the government.

“We chanted against Berlusconi: ‘We’ll never have confidence in you, you Mafioso’.

People threw rotting fruit and vegetables at police and the banks.

“Some people tried to occupy the Goldman Sachs offices but were turned away.

“Unemployment is high, particularly with young people.

“These protests are a chance for us to say that we’ve had enough—their system stinks.”
