Nurses at the JFK hospital in Liberia’s capital Monrovia have gone on strike demanding better protection against Ebola.
Almost 10 percent of the more than 700 people who have died are health workers.
The strikers’ spokesperson John Tugbeh said, “From the beginning of the Ebola outbreak we have not had any protective equipment to work with.
“As result, so many doctors got infected by the virus. We have to stay home until we get the PPEs (personal protective equipment).”
A starving Ebola patient escaped from quarantine in Elwa hospital in Monrovia last week.
Terrified locals fled as he staggered through a market looking for food.
“The patients are hungry, they are starving. No food, no water,” one woman in the crowd told the press. “The government needs to do more.”
Locals say this is the fifth patient to escape in recent weeks.
The poor have no reason to trust anything they are told by the country’s elite. This has aided the spread of the disease.
When the outbreak hit, Liberia had only 50 doctors for its population of 4.5 million.
