The first round of the French presidential elections is set to take place on Sunday of this week.

The two leading candidates—expected to be current president Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande from France’s Socialist Party—will then face each other in a run off on 6 May.

But the biggest surprise of the election campaign so far has been the rise of the Left Front, a coalition led by the Communist Party and former Socialist minister Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Melenchon, who had compared Hollande to a tepid bowl of water, is polling between 13 and 17 percent.
