Cleaners on strike Picture: www.sekonline.gr
Greece’s right wing prime minister Antonis Samaras has appealed to the German government for “breathing space” from austerity.
Samaras tried to boast that the Greek economy is on its way to recovery and will not need any more bailouts.
But he is desperate for some concessions to stem opposition at home.
That’s why he was asking for an end to the International Monetary Fund’s role in forcing austerity through the Greek budget as conditions of bailouts.
Samaras faced a public sector general strike against layoffs last week. He also faced a legal challenge, backed by protests, against his attempt to sack hundreds of cleaners.
Meanwhile more details have emerged about his former right hand man Takis Baltakos’ collusion with MPs in the fascist Golden Dawn party.
This comes at the same time as two Golden Dawn activists have been jailed for attempted murder.
The trial of Golden Dawn leaders also continues. It has been shown a video of the party’s number two teaching children to chant “Heil Hitler”.
