Hundreds of thousands of protesters laid siege to the Spanish congress building in Madrid on Tuesday in the country’s latest mass mobilisation against austerity.
They chanted calls for the right wing government of Mariano Rajoy to resign, and warned, “If there’s no solution there’ll be a revolution.”
After a day of marches, huge crowds converged on the Plaza de Neptuno and the roads around Congress.
Thousands stayed late into the night in the face of repeated police charges from riot cops firing rubber bullets.
The protests had been called to “rescue democracy” from the £50 billion austerity package that was imposed with a financial “rescue” of Spanish banks earlier this year.
