Thousands of protesters have re-taken the central square in Madrid to protest against the government’s continuing austerity plans.
The movement has had to face the police a number of times. But Friday of last week saw the highest numbers of protester injuries, as police blocked demonstrators’ entrance to the square and brutally attacked them.
As people flooded in after beating the blockade a protester shouted through a megaphone, “This square belongs to the people. We have much to celebrate today. We won this battle,” to applause and cheers.
They forced their way through and are rebuilding their camp. The movement began on 15 May this year.
