Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel has responded to the latest eurozone crisis by calling for closer European integration at a political level.
“The task of our generation is to complete economic and monetary union, and build political union in Europe,” she told her Christian Democratic Union party on Monday.
Merkel’s call will crank up tensions inside the European Union. France opposes Germany’s call for tighter controls on government spending. And Britain is adamantly opposed to further political union.
