The Italian navy discovered 30 bodies in a fishing boat on Monday of this week.

It has said that those who died were crammed into a compartment below decks and appear to have been asphyxiated.

The discovery was made as part of the Mare Nostrum “Our Sea” operation, where Italian authorities prowl the waters to intercept desperate migrants seeking entry into Europe.

The latest tragedy follows on from that off of the coast of Lampedusa last year where 366 migrants died.
