Kshama Sawant became the first socialist in decades to win a seat on a US city council last week. She beat the Democratic candidate in Seattle who had been in the seat for 16 years.

Sawant had been part of the Occupy movement. She a campaigned for a minimum wage of £9.30 an hour, rent control and taxing millionaires. She also criticised Seattle police for bias and excessive force.

Sawant said her campaign was built at the grassroots and “did not take a dime of corporate money”.
