The US-backed occupation of Somalia is finding it increasingly hard to keep control as fighting rages against the Ethiopian army and its allies in the country’s puppet government.

Some 100 heavily armed resistance fighters attacked a police station in central Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, on Friday of last week. At least two police and two soldiers died.

Insurgents ambushed an Ethiopian convoy about 180 miles north of the capital last week, killing eight soldiers. The Ethiopians responded by killing at least ten people tending livestock nearby, according to reports.

These bold attacks by the resistance shows its growing confidence. The Somali government was due to start negotiations with one resistance group on Monday of this week in the nearby country of Djibouti.

Last week Amnesty International released a report exposing the actions of the Somali government and the occupying Ethiopian troops. It shows they have a terrifying record of extrajudicial violence and rape.

Witnesses in Mogadishu are reported as saying Ethiopian troops respond to resistance hit-and-run attacks with artillery fire, frequently destroying entire neighbourhoods.

The US has backed Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia, offering logistical and air support. Four US cruise missiles recently flattened the compound where resistance leader Aden Hashi Ayro was staying, killing him and more than 11 others.

The crisis in Somalia has made it harder for the US to sustain plans for a higher profile in Africa, centred on its new Africom military command.

Resistance has pushed these imperialist projects off course, but the invasion of Somalia has caused horrific suffering.
