Global clothing importers from the West rushed to back the meagre increase to the minimum wage in Bangladesh.

They blame the on going protests not on appalling pay but on “mistrust” between workers and factory owners. And they continue to advise against allowing trade unions into the factories.

In a thinly-veiled threat against a further wage increase, a number of importers said that they would refuse to buy Bangladeshi ready-made garments if their prices started to rise.

But wage costs in the garment sector across the world are rising as workers from Thailand to Mexico, Cambodia to China are starting to get organised.
