French president Francois Hollande reached record unpopularity in the polls last week. More than three quarters of the population say they are unsatisfied with him.

At the same time up to a quarter of a million people protested against gay marriage in Paris on Sunday.

This was organised by a retired general with links to the paramilitary far right OAS group.

It operated during the Algerian war of independence.

MPs from the Tory-type parties held a banner with leading figures from the fascist Front National.

There were counter-protests against homophobic violence in Paris and other cities. The majority of French people still support gay marriage.
