Trans women and girls have been banned from Labour’s women’s conference, the Women’s Institute and Girlguiding.
But there is resistance to the attacks unleashed by the Supreme Court’s transphobic ruling.
In Sheffield, around 50 campaigners joined a protest on Saturday against the blocking of trans girls joining the Girlguiding youth organisation. Protesters held placards, including, “Brown owls against bigotry.”
A speaker at the protest read out a statement issued by Sheffield Trade Unionists For Trans Rights.
It says, “There is no legal basis on which these decisions have been made. The Supreme Court ruling has no legal guidance and none of these organisations have been forced to make their decision. In fact, their decisions are a breach to trans+ people’s human rights.
“To the Labour government we say—shame on you for tailing the far right in attacking trans women and the entire trans+ community.
“The decisions reinforce the transmisogynistic lie that trans women are a threat to cis women.
“This comes at a time when trans+ people are under attack from the government and the far right. We are clear—trans women and girls are not a threat to cis women and girls.
“Most violence against women and girls happens in the home or by someone known to the victim. The deep sexism of far right governments like Trump’s is ramping up violence against women and girls, trampling over women’s hard won rights and protecting abusers. It is the far right that pose a threat to us all, not trans women.
“The way trans women and girls are targeted by segregation or painted as ‘predators’ is not only transphobia it is transmisogyny. The attacks on trans women and girls not only hurt trans women and girls, they hurt all women and girls.”
More attacks on trans people will be happening next. We must be ready to organise in workplaces, schools and colleges to defend trans+ people from dehumanising bans and drastic cuts to healthcare provision.
