1.25 Million set to strike over pensions

WE CAN win this fight. If the unions are clear that this is a straight fight to defend pensions, there’s no way we can lose. Having over one million workers striking across the public sector on 23 March is a great start to this fight. New Labour is attacking us all — it’s only natural we fight as one. To win, we need us all out.

The idea that the government will fancy a tear up with us all — civil service, local government, education, health — is little more than fanciful. There is no way that they want to enter a fight with millions of workers this close to an election.

After all, the people this pensions robbery hits are the people they need to wheel out to vote for them. The TUC day of action on Friday 18 February is an important day. We need to let those union-sponsored MPs who are left wanting in supporting us know that their days are numbered. They take our money. In return we expect a defence of our pensions.

Our members understand all about the “work till you drop” culture and they reject it completely. There’s more heat in my union about this than I’ve seen for quite some time. We can’t let our political relations with the Labour government compromise our opposition to this attack. We have to work in every union, every section, and every workplace to build the action we’ve got, and fight for more. If we fight and win, we could be on a roll and win over pay, privatisation and PFI.
