WORKERS ON Tyneside’s Metro light rail system are threatening strike action over millennium holiday payments. They have rejected by eight to one an offer of a £350 bonus, triple pay and a day off for those working after 8pm on New Year’s Eve. The RMT union, representing half of Metro’s 600 employees, is asking for a £750 millennium bonus.

Docklands Light Railway staff in London are being offered a £900 bonus and Eurostar workers £1,000 plus a pair of first class return tickets for working the millenium. London Underground is offering staff who work after noon on New Year’s Eve double time, a day off and a bonus of £200. Rail unions have yet to respond to the offer.

Some 130 Oxford City Council workers protested outside Oxford’s town hall on Tuesday. They forced the Labour controlled council to drop plans to cut a day from their holiday. The council had planned the cut to make up for the extra bank holiday on New Year’s Eve this year.
