Former British soldier Danny Fitzsimons has been sentenced to 20 years in an Iraqi prison after being found guilty of killing two men and attempting to kill a third.

Fitzsimons was working in Iraq for private security firm ArmorGroup when he became embroiled in an argument at a base in Baghdad’s Green Zone, where foreign forces are based.

He could have been sentenced to death, and is the first foreign soldier to be convicted in an Iraqi court since the US-led invasion in 2003.

The incident took place in 2009. He has said that he did not believe the trial was fair.

Fitzsimons’ lawyers said that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after repeated tours of Iraq and Kosovo.

His family and friends are now campaigning to bring him back to Britain to serve his sentence here.
