Around 5,000 members of the PCS civil service workers’ union are to join the Scottish local government workers in striking over pay on Wednesday of this week.
The workers, in the Scottish government and Registers of Scotland departments, have already struck solidly on 31 July.
The PCS has been one of the unions most strongly arguing for coordinated action to win over pay.
Scottish ministers have imposed a 2 percent pay increase on their own workforce in the Scottish government.
PCS is also now balloting its members in the Sheriff and High Courts, and the Procurator Fiscal Service.
Eddie Reilly, the PCS Scottish secretary, said, “Low paid civil servants are not the cause of inflation – they are the victims. Alex Salmond and John Swinney can’t stay in hiding forever.
“Ministers need to face up to their responsibilities in this dispute. It seems to be the case with Scottish ministers that when the going gets tough, the tough go into hiding.”
