THE GOVERNMENT’S claims about the safety of genetically modified crops were demolished last week. New Labour and the giant GM companies have long argued that GM crops could not contaminate other non-GM crops grown nearby.
Now Advanta, one of the biggest GM crop producers, has admitted that its GM oilseed rape grown in Canada was contaminated by GM rape grown at least 800 metres away. It has also admitted that seed from the GM-contaminated rape has been sold across Europe and unwittingly planted by farmers, spreading the risk of contamination.
GM pollen was also found recently in honey produced in Britain-three miles away from GM crops. Yet New Labour is continuing with crop trials.
