Are you angry at Keir Starmer betraying hopes for change? Sick of Labour’s support for Israel’s genocide and scapegoating of migrants? And fed up with far right fraud Nigel Farage being the loudest voice of opposition to the government?
Then you should be at the Summit of Resistance in London on Saturday 29 March.
It will “bring together all those who believe” in fighting for “an alternative to austerity, wars, climate denial and racism”.
Left wing MPs, trade unionists, Palestine and climate campaigners, anti-racist activists and others are backing the summit. Speakers include Jeremy Corbyn MP, Yanis Varoufakis and economists Grace Blakeley and James Meadway and striking workers.
NEU education union general secretary Daniel Kebede and Bfawu food workers’ union leader Sarah Woolley are among the leading trade unionists who have backed it.
The Summit of Resistance comes at an urgent time.
Millions of people have had their hopes dashed by over 40 years of neoliberalism, free market policies that fuel low wages, soaring rents and the lack of decent jobs. That was turbocharged under Tory austerity and now Labour won’t break with that legacy.
At home, Starmer and Co. cosy up to big business and the super-rich while telling the rest of us that “hard choices” are necessary. And abroad, Labour supports Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and pours money into arms.
Far right and racist forces are growing out of the crisis of neoliberalism. Reform UK feeds off decades of politicians and the media normalising racism against migrants.
It taps into the despair and disillusionment with mainstream politics—and says it’s your migrant neighbour or Muslim workmate who’s to blame.
Mass campaigning through Stand Up To Racism (SUTR), one of the summit’s sponsors, is key to pushing back Reform UK.
But the left has to offer an alternative to neoliberalism that destroys working class people’s lives and fuels the far right. As the summit’s launch statement says, “It’s time to turn the tide on despair and build a movement of hope.”
Crucially, it means we need much more struggle on the streets and picket lines against the Starmer government’s agenda. Struggle could transform the political situation in Britain.
The summit will be a place to learn from one another’s movements, campaigns, strikes and struggles.
If you’ve marched or taken action for Palestine, you should be there. If you turned out in the streets to stop the wave of far right violence in the summer, get down to the summit.
If you’re a striking worker, this is the place for you to receive solidarity and spread the word about your fight. And if you’re a trade unionist who wants to see a bigger fightback from the unions against Starmer, organise with grassroots activists who want the same.
The summit’s supporters call “on all trade unionists, campaigners and activists” to join the summit.
They say the aim is “to begin to construct through debate and discussion a network of activists across sectors” that “can deliver solidarity”.
It would boost “those who are taking action to protect their living standards” and “building the movements” against genocide and war, the far right and climate chaos.
