Donald Trump’s trade war has thrown global capitalism deeper into crisis. The imposition of staggering tariffs—taxes on imports—has led to market turmoil and the prospects of a recession.
Investors have backed away from putting their money into bonds, usually a safe place to invest.
Trump has delayed imposing higher tariffs on imports from most parts of the world. But he has ramped up tariffs on Chinese goods to at least 145 percent.
And the repercussions are still being felt globally, including in Britain, where the Labour government has doubled down on economic nationalism.
There is intense debate and discussion among socialists about what the trade war means.
Does this represent the end of the neoliberal world order? Will trade wars fuel military conflict? What will tariffs mean for workers? And how can we organise to refuse to pay for the bosses’ crisis?
Socialist Worker columnist Alex Callinicos will answer your questions in an online forum on Monday evening.
