With shouts of “Tony Blair, he don’t care,” angry former steelworkers took to the streets of Cardiff last Saturday as part of the campaign to win back their lost pensions.
More than 100 former employees of Allied Steel and Wire (ASW) marched in protest at “a lack of government support”.
Workers from other firms who had lost their pensions walked with ASW campaigners in a show of solidarity, blowing whistles, waving placards and demanding “justice now”.
“We won’t stop fighting until we all get our pensions in full,” said ex-ASW worker John Benson who organised the march with former colleagues Phil Jones and Tony Magee.
“We thought our pensions were safe and guaranteed. The government has turned its backs on us.”
ASW workers were left financially devastated when the firm collapsed in 2002, with a shortfall in the company pension fund robbing them of most of the money they saved.
