Other big newspaper proprietors are stalking the Telegraph. None of those in the running to take over the paper will do anything to increase “diversity” or “choice” in the press.
Those in the running are:
•Richard Desmond, the pornographer and donor to the Labour Party. He owns the Daily Express and a string of other titles.
•Lord Rothermere’s Daily Mail and General Trust. They would slot the Telegraph seamlessly into their right wing stable.
•Michael Green, now standing down as chair of Carlton Communications. He has a personal fortune of $150 million.
•Andrew Neil, former Sunday Times editor, TV pundit and now the publisher of the Scotsman and the Business. He will almost certainly take a look on behalf of his proprietors, the billionaire Barclay brothers.
